Transportation & Access
Transportation & Gateway city
Reaching Tibet is an unforgettable part of the travel experience, offering some of the highest and most scenic routes in the world. Foreign travelers can access the Tibet Autonomous Region by flight, train, or overland route, with each option providing its own unique views and advantages. The most popular gateways are major Chinese cities such as Chengdu, Beijing, Xining, and Shanghai, as well as Kathmandu in Nepal.
The Qinghai–Tibet Railway is one of the world’s highest railway lines and offers a spectacular, safe, and comfortable journey into Lhasa. Flights remain the fastest option, connecting Lhasa Gonggar Airport with multiple Chinese hubs and Kathmandu (seasonal). Overland routes from Sichuan, Yunnan, Qinghai, or Nepal offer dramatic mountain scenery but require careful altitude preparation.
For foreign travelers, it’s important to note that a Tibet Travel Permit (TTP) is required before boarding any Tibet-bound train or flight. Once inside Tibet, all travel outside Lhasa must be arranged through a licensed local agency, including a private driver and guide.
