What is the Saga Dawa Festival?

Saga Dawa is an annual Tibetan festival that celebrates the birth, enlightenment, and death of  Lord Buddha Shakyamuni, making it one of the most important spiritual events in Tibetan Buddhism. The festival typically takes place in  May or June (depending on the lunar calendar), with the highlight being the  full moon day  of Saga Dawa, which marks the Buddha’s enlightenment.

During this time, thousands of pilgrims from Tibet and neighboring regions gather at sacred sites like  Mount Kailash  to perform religious rituals, light butter lamps, offer prayers, and walk the Kora (the sacred circuit around Kailash). The festival’s spiritual atmosphere, combined with the majestic Himalayan backdrop, creates an unforgettable experience.

Why Visit Mount Kailash During Saga Dawa Festival?

– Sacred Pilgrimage: Mount Kailash, considered the dwelling place of Lord Shiva in Hinduism and the sacred site of Buddhism, is a pilgrimage destination for many. The Saga Dawa Festival  adds a unique dimension to this journey, with the sacred rites and rituals happening at the foot of the mountain.

– Cultural Significance:  This is a time when Tibetans and pilgrims from various regions come together in a deep spiritual atmosphere. The pilgrimage is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to witness vibrant Tibetan Buddhist ceremonies, including circumambulations (Kora), pujas (prayers), and butter lamp offerings.

– Blessings and Purification: Participating in the Kailash Kora  during Saga Dawa is believed to purify one’s soul and bring blessings for health, wealth, and spiritual progress.
